Located in the central part of the state of Kerala, Thrissur, formerly known as Trichur, is the cultural capital of the state. The close association of the city can be understood from its name that is considered to have originated from the terms Thiru-Shiva-Perur, which in Malayalam translates literally to ‘the city with the name of the Lord Siva’. There is yet another interpretation to the name of the city that associates to the three important Shiva temples in the city name, Vadakkunnathan temple, Irattachira Shiva temple, and Asokeswaram Siva temple and is believed that the name has been derived from Tri-Shiva-Peroor which means the land with three Shiva temples.

Places to Visit in Thrissur

Vadakkumnathan Temple

This 1000-year-old Shiva temple is located right at the center of the city and is one of the most traditionally designed temples in Kerala. There are many mural paintings that are worth encountering when you visit the temple. Some of these paintings are more than 400 years old. The most remarkable one is probably the Nataraja mural right at the entrance of the temple.

Athirapally Waterfalls

About 60km away from the city, the Athirapally Waterfall is a very popular tourist destination in Thrissur. The waterfall is beautiful and it is a popular picnic spot for the tourists. Also, the hanging bridge here is a popular tourist spot and you can visit the Thumboormuzhi Butterfly Park on the way. This Butterfly Park has more than 140 species of butterflies that will mesmerize you.
