Kumarakom is an enchanting backwater destination in Kerala, near Kottayam. This sleepy, laidback town ambles along at a leisurely pace, with nobody in an apparent rush to do anything – the perfect ambience for holiday makers! The town is served by narrow roads that alternately dip and rise steeply, with the ethereal vista of lush paddy fields and shimmering water bodies on either side.
The Vembanad lake is the major water body here, and the most popular location for houseboats in Kumarakom. A major attraction of Kumarakom is the bird sanctuary, spread over 14 acres; the best way to traverse this sanctuary is in a hhouseboat, as it cruises sedately on the waters. Nature lovers can espy several endangered bird species like herons and egrets, and the Siberian stork, the famous migratory visitor from Russia, in the season.
The houseboats in Kerala is also known as Kettuvallams, which was a used to carry high loads from the isolated villages of Kerala backwater regions to the merchant towns like Kollam, Alleppey, Kottayam and Cochin areas. Even now many people in Kerala depend on these Kettuvalloms for transportation purposes. Kettuvalloms play a major role in Kerala’s economic growth too.
As your houseboat floats down the brackish backwaters, you can get glimpses of scintillating beauty – both natural and manmade. You will pass age old monuments, places of worship, and homes built on the water’s edge, most with their own boat jetties and boats tied up; traditional snake boats, ferries and fishing boats; birds flying high in formation, lofty coconut palms doing a gentle dance in the balmy breeze; exotic aquatic animals and plants; tiny islands spread all along… a houseboat cruise in Kumarakom is an exquisite experience that will remain with you for life.
Whether you’re looking for a romantic cruise with your love, spending some quality time with family and kids, or have a bash with friends and colleagues, there are Kumarakom houseboat packages for everyone and every occasion. The houseboats often feature traditional Kerala ‘kettuvallam’ design on the outside, replete with straw and coir roofs, bamboo mats and more – a throwback to a bygone era. However, they are equipped with all modern facilities and amenities to make your stay pleasant, comfortable, enjoyable and luxurious. You can find European toilets in all houseboats, well furnished with carpets and quality linen, and in some boats – bathtubs or Jacuzzi too. You can choose from different categories of houseboats depending on your budget and the number of people in your group.
Our on-board crew will go all out to pamper you and ensure you have a mesmerizing experience on our Kumarakom boat house. You will be served freshly cooked food in typical Kerala style: spicy, tangy and delightful. Far away from the maddening pace of the city, indulge your senses and feel the tension ebb away with the soft splash of the water against the boat. Guests can experience the emerald river and canals, the culture of people living out there, how canals are being used by them, green paddy fields, fleet of ducks and cannoning boats selling local products. All these will give a different experience to the tourists from different places.
The check in and checkout timings are quite strict due to daily booking of boats. The boats will be stationary from 17:30 hrs till next day 7:30 hrs as per government rules.
To have a holistic Kerala experience, you can also request a traditional dance performance, or Ayurvedic spa treatment to pamper your mind, body and soul. Enjoy blissful, undisturbed sleep aboard your floating haven; rejuvenate your senses, and leave refreshed, recharged and reborn.
I enjoyed this mini-cruise on the Backwaters; the boat was very comfortable, attentive staff and delicious food.We were able to admire the magnificent scenery along the canals, enjoy the peaceful setting and observe nature, birds, trees, rice fields and residents living near the Backwaters. An unforgettable trip that I recommend to lovers of nature.
he chance to travel in the exotic state of Kerala along the banks of a beautiful river, surrounded by lush green vegetation was truly an amazing experience. The landscape was fully covered of thick forest and neighbouring the gorgeous waterfalls brings the real eternal joy. Thanks to the wonderful experience gifted by Tours In India.
I took houseboats and also canoe trip here and it was fabulous! Beautiful untouched nature with so much greenery and water canals all over like city streets and intersections. Also mango, banana and coconut trees on watersides… people transporting rice from the fields to the city with human power boats. Beautiful experience and professional level of service, totally recommended!
